Hello from Munich, where we’re a few shows away from the end of the second European tour for Animal Joy. It’s a little hard to believe that we’ll be on the west coast of the USA in a little over a week for what are likely to be our only remaining US headlining shows this year.
While we’re out there, we’ll also be taping an episode of Nigel Godrich’s “From the Basement” TV/Web series (which might be the only time we’re ever filmed in 3D).
After that, we’re looking forward to a little time off while I go to the Falklands, and then return to the road in the US with Dinosaur Jr. in October and on our own in Europe and the UK in November.
There’s plenty more in the pipe, including a new mini-album, about which we’ll have more details soon.

At long last, the new Loma album, "How Will I Live Without a Body?" has finally been released by Sub Pop Records . I'm unwrapping the LP for the first time in the video.
I'm very proud of this record. It took many months of work on two continents, and I'm still a bit amazed that what started as a backstage conversation at a Shearwater / Cross Record show in 2017 is three albums in.
(NB: please don't worry that I'm setting Shearwater aside—we're partway through a new record, in fact, which I'll have more about soon.)
But Loma has been a fascinating journey for me, especially as a songwriter and arranger. And if you like the gentle/grand/atmospheric/eerie sides of SW, I think I can guarantee that you'd make friends with this album. Though it's also its own (rare) beast.

This is one of the best caracara videos I've ever seen. See if you can make out what the bird (a crested caracara) is thinking, especially when it 'speaks'...I'd like to think it's approximating a meow. JM
Curiosity killed the cat, but a pane of glass brought him back. 🤣 I think the caracara is sincerely curious and making a connection. I don't trust the cat's motives though.

I'm really proud of this record. It's dreamy and enveloping, and took us places we never thought we would go. We recorded it over the past two years in Texas, NYC, Germany, and the UK.
As usual with Loma, we wrote the music together—though I wrote a hefty chunk of the lyrics.
There's also a beautiful video, directed by our singer Emily Cross, for the first single "How It Starts" (which can be found in the link). It has a surprise ending, which should answer any questions about touring in the near term.
Other than this, I'm busy as ever. There'll be some real Shearwater news soon—and I'm still working on a new book about the once and future life of Antarctica.
